Short video:

Text to speech is magical. This technology enables us to type out text and get the computer to read (or say) it just like a human! You will encounter Text to speech at various places in exotel platform such as Greeting and IVR applet. You just need to type in the text that you want to read out and voilà..!

Exotel currently uses the free & open source Festival Text to speech engine presented to the world by the Center for speech technology research at the University of Edinburgh & Amazon Polly. This engine needs to be powered by a speech synthesis voice library which, for our understanding, is like a dictionary of all the possible pronunciations spoken by a single person packed as a library.

HMM based Synthesiser built by Carnegie Mellon University to be most understandable by an Indian audience.

Until we get our TTS highly suitable for the Indian audience (If you have suggestions, Please send it to us!), Consider using our TTS only when testing your app (Typically on a trial number) or when you don't have a choice (Like reading numbers that the user has entered!)

How To:

  • Login to your Exotel Dashboard

  • Go to the Edit Call App, where you need to make changes

-> If you wish to create a new call flow to test out how text to speech sounds like then follow the steps below. After you create the flow refer to this article for assign exophone to a call flow to make test call to hear how the robotic voice sound

-> You will be taken to the flow builder once you click on the OK button.

  • Click on the Greeting applet to add the text

  • Once the Greeting text is typed, Click on Save.

The system read out the text that you enter in this section and click on the Save button (Robotic Voice will be played)

If you wish to get the text recorded by the voice-over artist (Tariff will be applicable)  then click “Get this text recorded”.  Refer to this article for more details: How can I request a voice over and where can I find my voice over recordings?
